Brian Cummings Joins Lawyers for Civil Rights as the 2023 Brown Rudnick Summer Fellow

Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR) is pleased to welcome Brian Cummings as the 2023 Brown Rudnick Summer Fellow.  Launched in 2022, the Fellowship provides a $10,000 stipend to law students who want to gain civil rights experience through a summer internship at LCR but are unable to do so due to financial constraints.  It is funded through a generous gift by Brown Rudnick LLP of legal fees awarded as part of the settlement of a landmark voting rights case brought by the firm and LCR on behalf of Black and Latinx voters in Worcester, MA.

Brian is a rising second-year law student at Suffolk University School of Law, and he holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in Sociology and Global Studies from Florida Gulf Coast University.  Brian formerly worked as an Airman in the U.S. Air Force in Alaska and Kuwait, an Asset Protection Associate at JCPenney, and a Global Trade Compliance Specialist at Allyn International.

“We congratulate Brian on his selection as the 2023 Brown Rudnick Summer Fellow,” said partner Andrew Strehle, chair of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee. “We are pleased to promote the development of future generations of civil rights advocates through our support of LCR.”

“Each year, many law students tell us they would like to accept a summer internship at LCR, but that their finances preclude it,” said Oren Sellstrom, Litigation Director at LCR.  “The Brown Rudnick Fellowship addresses that issue in an innovative way, opening the door for students to learn from civil rights attorneys at LCR, work with community groups, and develop advocacy skills that serve as a long-lasting foundation for their legal careers.”

This summer, Brian has already engaged in significant legal research and advocacy to promote equal opportunity for minority-owned businesses.  He is also expected to work on a variety of other matters on LCR’s docket, including equal educational opportunity, voting rights, and police accountability.
