Brian Cummings Joins\u00a0Lawyers for Civil Rights as the\u00a02023 Brown Rudnick Summer Fellow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR) is pleased to welcome Brian Cummings<\/strong> as the 2023 Brown Rudnick Summer Fellow.\u00a0\u00a0Launched in 2022, the Fellowship provides a $10,000 stipend to law students who want to gain civil rights experience through a summer internship at LCR but are unable to do so due to financial constraints.\u00a0\u00a0It is funded through a generous gift by Brown Rudnick LLP of legal fees awarded as part of the settlement of a landmark voting rights case brought by the firm and LCR on behalf of Black and Latinx voters in Worcester, MA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Brian is a rising second-year law student at Suffolk University School of Law, and he holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and a minor in Sociology and Global Studies from Florida Gulf Coast University. Brian formerly worked as an Airman in the U.S. Air Force in Alaska and Kuwait, an Asset Protection Associate at JCPenney, and a Global Trade Compliance Specialist at Allyn International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe congratulate Brian on his selection as the 2023 Brown Rudnick Summer Fellow,\u201d said partner Andrew Strehle<\/strong>, chair of the Firm\u2019s Pro Bono Committee. \u201cWe are pleased to promote the development of future generations of civil rights advocates through our support of LCR.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEach year, many law students tell us they would like to accept a summer internship at LCR, but that their finances preclude it,\u201d said Oren Sellstrom<\/strong>, Litigation Director at LCR.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cThe Brown Rudnick Fellowship addresses that issue in an innovative way, opening the door for students to learn from civil rights attorneys at LCR, work with community groups, and develop advocacy skills that serve as a long-lasting foundation for their legal careers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n This summer, Brian has already engaged in significant legal research and advocacy to promote equal opportunity for minority-owned businesses. He is also expected to work on a variety of other matters on LCR\u2019s docket, including equal educational opportunity, voting rights, and police accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
