The U.S. Supreme Court announced a 4-4 vote in United States v. Texas. As a result, important immigration protections that President Obama announced in 2014 remain blocked nationwide by a lower court order from a judge in Texas. This is a setback for our entire country. It places millions of families in danger of being torn apart, disrupting communities and our economy. Today’s split decision demonstrates the legal and social consequences of having a vacancy in our nation’s highest court. Without a full complement of justices to vet cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, our justice system will remain substantially undermined.
On June 24, 2016, the Lawyers’ Committee participated in a press debriefing with Senator Ed Markey in connection with this immigration case.
