Statement in Response to the Shooting in Charleston, SC

Racial Justice

At the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, we dream of a society where every person – regardless of race, color, creed, age, national origin, immigration status, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability – can live without fear of violence or discrimination.

We are deeply saddened by the massacre that took place in the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

We express our deepest sympathies and condolences to the individuals and communities affected by this hate crime. Our thoughts, prayers, and well wishes are with the families who have lost loved ones, communities in Greater Charleston, and the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The tragic nature of this racially motivated violence serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of racial justice.
