LCCR Calls for Affirmative Civil Rights Agenda in New Presidency
From the NECN’s The Take With Sue O’Connell and Boston Herald:
Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, with the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, said the organization is non-partisan and noted a transfer of power in the presidency from Democrat to Republican will have no bearing on the organization’s work.
“The bottom line is immigrants have rights that emanate from not just the Constitution but federal law. … None of that goes away over night,” he said. “We will continue to protect the rights of people of color, low-income individuals, and immigrant communities.”
From the Bay State Banner:
Oren Sellstrom, litigation director for the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, said many in the civil rights community are worried that Trump’s policies will reflect the xenophobia and racism woven through his campaign.
“The question now is how much Trump is going to govern in that spirit. It remains to be seen what his actual policy and practices are going to be,” Sellstrom said.
“The concern, particularly with the judicial, is that this could mean the roll back of advancements,” Sellstrom said. “Those kinds of civil rights issues had been on a good trajectory, and it is up to all of us to ensure that those rights continue and are not stopped in their tracks.”
On Fox25 News:
Trump will be able to choose who fills a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court and that has civil rights activists like Matt Cregor, from the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, concerned.
“This is a difficult time to put forward an affirmative agenda, but it’s essential that we do so; that this is not simply playing defense against a continually eroding back wall,” Cregor said.
