Lawyers for Civil Rights is working to bring Zapatos Rojos (Red Shoes), the acclaimed public art and advocacy installation, to Boston. Created by Mexican artist Elina Chauvet, the installation memorializes women and girls lost to gender-based violence through the public display of donated shoes painted red by community members.
At LCR, we believe justice is shaped not only in courtrooms, but also through storytelling, culture, visibility, and community engagement. Through our Artist-in-Residence program, we have been exploring how art can help communities reflect, heal, connect, and access legal knowledge and resources in meaningful ways.
This project is especially important to us because of our advocacy work with immigrant survivors of violence, including our representation connected to the disappearance of Reina Carolina Morales Rojas, a Salvadoran immigrant mother who vanished after fleeing gender-based violence.
We are currently seeking community partners interested in helping shape and participate in this effort. The project will include a public installation and community activation event; collaborative planning meetings with partner organizations; community outreach and shoe collection efforts; and a legal empowerment and shoe-painting workshop focused on survivor resources and legal protections. More details in the community invitation.
