Statement from Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, the Executive Director of Lawyers for Civil Rights, a legal organization in Boston providing free legal support to people of color, immigrants, and low-income people:

At Lawyers for Civil Rights, our commitment to advancing civil rights remains unshaken. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, our mission transcends political divides and reaches beyond urban, suburban, and rural boundaries. We’re here to protect the rights of the most vulnerable:

  • That’s why we represent low-income families experiencing exploitation in trailer parks;
  • That’s why we support victims of racial profiling and hate crimes; and
  • That’s why we’re committed to closing the wealth gap by supporting small businesses.

Justice is the common thread that runs through all of our work.

This moment is a call to action and a reminder of the importance of resilience and solidarity. Now, more than ever, it’s essential that we avoid demonizing others based on identities or perceptions. Instead, we must focus on our values and the principles that unify us.

As we look to the future, Lawyers for Civil Rights is well-prepared for the many challenges that will surely come. Among these are serious threats of mass deportation and an end to humanitarian protections. At Lawyers for Civil Rights, we have been down this road before. Time after time, we have filed lawsuits against the Trump Administration—as we would against any official, blue or red, who tramples on the Constitution:

  • That’s why we sued to secure a nation-wide injunction preventing the dismantlement of the Fair Housing Act;
  • That’s why we sued to protect Temporary Protected Status (TPS);
  • That’s why we sued to block immigration arrests in courthouses; and
  • That’s why we filed some of the earliest cases to reunite children with their parents during the family separation crisis.

At Lawyers for Civil Rights, we know what it takes to defend vulnerable communities of all colors and stripes. We also have the tools, the skills, and the vision to build a world rooted in equity and empowerment for all.

Looking forward, the availability of free legal support will be among the most crucial interventions. As we consider the vulnerable communities that will be most affected, free legal services will be more essential than ever for those most at risk.

Our commitment remains steadfast to the people we serve—in housing projects, trailer parks, detention facilities, workplaces, healthcare settings, schools, and beyond. Lawyers for Civil Rights is fully recommitted to challenging injustice wherever it appears, while respecting those who may see the world differently. By doing so, we uphold the integrity of our communities and reinforce the bonds that connect us.

Respect for the rule of law is vital. With your support, Lawyers for Civil Rights will safeguard our institutions, ensuring they continue to provide essential checks and balances that protect basic rights and dignity. We will fight against disenfranchisement—locally and nationally. We will fight for fairness—from college admissions to zoning

Have no doubt: Lawyers for Civil Rights will remain an active watchdog, knowing that our work today lays the foundation for a society where everyone can thrive.

We invite you to watch us. We invite you to join us.

Bet on Lawyers for Civil Rights, and together, we will make a difference.
