Sue. And Build. Our New Year’s commitment is simple: sue—early and often—and build.

There’s a hockey lesson that captures our approach: if you skate to where the puck is, you miss it. You have to anticipate where it’s going. That kind of forward-looking strategy—anticipating need—has been one of our most powerful contributions to the civil rights movement.

Right now, we are filing case after case resetting the tone when powerful actors try to normalize discrimination and hate; setting powerful legal precedent; and uplifting communities by protecting the rights of those most at risk.

This role has never been more urgent. As institutions like the Department of Justice are gutted, and as civil rights and DEI efforts are dismantled and demonized, the work of independent civil rights organizations becomes even more essential. The availability of free legal support is among the most critical interventions. In a society that is still adjusting to sweeping government action and federal overreach, we are committed to playing both defense and offense.

We also remain equally dedicated to building. That’s why our New Year’s resolution is twofold:

We will sue—because rights don’t defend themselves.

And we will build—because justice is not only about stopping harm, but also about creating the conditions for people to thrive.

In the year ahead, we will: help more small businesses grow and succeed as part of our BizGrow work to close the wealth gap; and invest in healing through special initiatives—like our Artist-in-Residence program—because we know that healing takes more than one lawsuit, and it extends far beyond advocacy alone.

That is our commitment for the year ahead—unequivocally:

Sue. And build.

If you’re able to make a year-end or New Year’s gift, your support fuels the litigation that protects communities now, and the building work that expands opportunity for the future.
