Immigrant Rights

Lawyers for Civil Rights is a steadfast advocate for immigrant rights and humanitarian protections. Our groundbreaking work has set new legal and community precedents, with LCR often leading the nation in challenging discriminatory federal policies, particularly those targeting immigrants based on national origin.

During the first Trump Administration, we filed some of the nation’s earliest lawsuits to defend immigrant-friendly cities, protect humanitarian programs, help reunite families separated at the border, and challenge immigration enforcement actions in sensitive locations such as courthouses.

In 2025, our work continues this legacy. In recent months, LCR has filed cutting-edge cases challenging attacks on birthright citizenship, opposing efforts to dismantle Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and suing to stop the federal government from defunding immigrant-friendly cities.

We also filed some of the first complaints in the country challenging aggressive immigration enforcement tactics, representing law-abiding individuals forcibly removed from their vehicles and subjected to physical violence and destruction of property.

Opening our Schools to Immigrant Children: Immigrant families arriving in Massachusetts are reporting barriers to enrolling their children in school – a clear violation of their right to an education. Saugus Public Schools recently passed an exclusionary policy illegally denying school admission to families who don’t fill out the Town Census. It also imposes other overly- stringent residency and proof-of- identity requirements that disproportionately impact immigrant families. LCR joined forces with Massachusetts Advocates for Children and pro bono counsel from Anderson & Kreiger LLP to file a lawsuit in response to the policy. LEARN MORE
