Carlos Cares was started in 2020 by the family of Carlos J. Perez-Albuerne to honor his memory.
Carlos J. Perez-Albuerne
Carlos died at age 50. Although never a smoker, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and succumbed to the disease 2 1/2 years later.
This year, Carlos Cares is asking for your support in raising money for Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR), a non-profit legal organization providing free legal support to low-income people and immigrants.
Carlos was a pro bono ally and friend of LCR.
Carlos’ attention was drawn to LCR as part of his commitment to pro bono work. As pro bono counsel, along with his friends and colleagues from Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, he helped to preserve Temporary Protected Status (TPS), a life-changing immigration program providing humanitarian protection and relief to hundreds of thousands of people locally and nationally. Carlos’ last oral argument was at the federal courthouse in Boston, in a high-profile national case with LCR on behalf of TPS recipients.
The availability of TPS today is a direct result of Carlos’ powerful legal and pro bono advocacy. Carlos’ fierce advocacy enabled a favorable resolution by the federal government. None of this would be possible without Carlos’ work.
LCR is now working directly with low-income migrant families, providing them with free legal support to apply for humanitarian protection through TPS. In this manner, LCR is actively preserving and honoring Carlos’ memory and legacy.
Carlos Cares invites friends and allies to support this important work by setting the ambitious goal of raising $50,000 to honor Carlos’ 50 years of life. All donations to LCR are tax-deductible.
Your gift in honor of Carlos’ memory will help provide humanitarian relief for families from countries such as Venezuela and Haiti who are fleeing violence and persecution:
$500 helps a newly arrived migrant apply for immigration relief.
$1000 helps a newly arrived migrant understand their legal options and access TPS and humanitarian relief.
$2500 helps fund an on-site legal clinic to explain TPS and other avenues of relief to migrants and assist with relief applications.
This work is critical to bring Carlos’ vision to realization, and to bring this important work directly into low-income communities and households.
TPS is life-changing. It offers employment authorization and protection from deportation. This helps migrants meaningfully integrate into our communities. We hope you will join us to bring this work to scale for migrant families in Carlos’ memory.
