Statement in Response to the Federal Government’s Anti-LGBT Stance

Since 1968, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice has fought steadfastly against discrimination. We dream of a society where every person – regardless of race, color, creed, age, national origin, immigration status, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability – can contribute their skills and talents to make our country a better place for all of us.

We are deeply concerned with the anti-LGBT arguments made by the U.S. Department of Justice in a legal brief filed in court. According to the federal government’s brief, LGBT people are not protected from discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits employment discrimination. This anti-LGBT legal stance comes on the heels of President Trump’s tweet threatening to ban transgender people from military service.

We are all diminished when any one of us is treated unequally. At the Lawyers’ Committee, we will continue to fight for justice and equality for all.
