Lauren Sampson Day

Race and Climate

At Lawyers for Civil Rights, we continue to remember the life and legacy of our friend and colleague, Lauren Sampson.

Lauren’s birthday, April 18, has been officially declared the Lauren Sampson Day of Environmental Justice by the City Council in Boston.

We have also spearheaded the placement of a memorial plaque in LoPresti Park in East Boston in Lauren’s honor. The memorial plaque will be placed at one of three honey locust trees nestled in a cove overlooking the Boston harbor and skyline. The park is a climate resilient park that was developed to address climate change impacts, provide social, environmental, economic and health benefits, and advance equitable access to quality green spaces.

“Today, we wholeheartedly recommit to fighting aggressively for Lauren’s values. In Lauren’s honor, we will deliberately and intentionally deepen and expand our work on behalf of people of color and immigrants. From housing to climate justice and beyond, we will work tirelessly to fully realize her vision of justice and equity. This work starts now,” said Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, Executive Director of Lawyers for Civil Rights.
