The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice announced today that it has launched the Edward J. Barshak Fund for Justice, in honor of Edward J. Barshak, a partner at Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C. The fund has been established to provide dedicated litigation resources for the Lawyers’ Committee’s anti-discrimination cases.

Barshak is a longtime Board Member of the Lawyers’ Committee, an organization founded at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve the legal community in the struggle against discrimination. The organization safeguards the civil, social, and economic rights of people throughout Massachusetts. Barshak has long championed the Lawyers’ Committee’s civil rights docket.

“Among his many accomplishments, Ed led the bar in educating the public about the civil rights and integration movement,” said Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, the Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee. He noted that the Boston Bar Association honored Barshak with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 for his longstanding dedication to the equal and fair administration of justice. “It is only fitting that the Lawyers’ Committee – in partnership with Boston’s leading law firms – honor him for being an exceptional role model and advocate for civil rights,” added Espinoza-Madrigal.

“Ed has been a fierce champion for civil rights, and has dedicated his career to providing equal and fair access to justice,” said Regina Roman, managing partner at Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C. “We are proud to stand with the Lawyers’ Committee to honor Ed’s contributions to the bar and to the community,” added Roman.

“Ed has worked tirelessly to ensure that all individuals have equal opportunity, particularly in the workplace,” said Lisa J. Pirozzolo, a partner at WilmerHale, and Co-Chair of the Lawyers’ Committee’s Board of Directors. “We applaud his leadership and accomplishments,” added Pirozzolo.

Sugarman, Rogers, Barshak & Cohen, P.C. and WilmerHale will hold a reception in Barshak’s honor on April 27, 2016.
