Lawyers’ Committee Applauds Mayor Walsh’s Call for Public Conversations on Race and Equity

Yesterday, at the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Martin Walsh announced that he will hold a series of public conversations on race and equity. We applaud Mayor Walsh for encouraging Bostonians to engage in open, transparent, and robust dialogue.

As Mayor Walsh aptly noted: “Boston is long overdue for a more open and intentional conversation about race.” At the Lawyers’ Committee, we know that far too many people in our growing and dynamic city do not see themselves reflected in our public and private institutions. We hope that the Mayor’s public conversations will help inform policies and priorities across the city.

These catalytic conversations can go a long way in helping us to tackle the growing distrust between police and communities of color, to overcome racial disparities in our schools, and to close the opportunity gap for low-income families.

Through these dialogues, we look forward to tackling the critical need for diversity, inclusion, and community representation across our city, particularly in our police department and schools.
