Design for Equity

Economic Justice, Housing, Racial Justice

Design For Equity, a conference taking place at the ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) on November 15-16, 2016, aims to address the history of racial inequity in Boston’s built environment, with a goal of developing actionable tools for design professionals and others to combat these deeply-rooted issues. As part of this conference, the Lawyers’ Committee’s executive director, Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, participated in a panel titled: “Truth and Reconciliation: Owning the History that Got Us to Where We Are.” The panel discussion was followed by a design charrette on November 16, 2016, focusing on the Fairmount Commuter Line. Notably, the Lawyers’ Committee called for a civil rights probe in response to reports that trains were diverted away from minority and low-income communities along the Fairmount Commuter Line.
